What is ZOO file?

The .ZOO file extension is a data compression file format that is produced by a data compression program of the same name; ZOO. The ZOO format is mainly compatible with Unix-like operating systems. However, it is no longer widely used today.

This file format was often accompanied by a small decompression program called Booz and was mostly used on the digital VAX computers running on an OpenVMS operating system.

.ZOO file format is based on an algorithm called Lempel-Ziv compression algorithm and can reduce the size of files by up to 80 percent, depending on the type of file.

The main advantage of the .ZOO file extension was the ability to retain and compress the data from multiple “generations” of the same file. This was an advantage as it allowed access to files that have been subject to changes to be backed up in a way that allows the user access to the previous unchanged files.
